Assalam-o-Alaikum

Budgerigar Society of Pakistan recently organized the first internet based Budgerigar Show of its kind in Pakistan recently. As this was carried out on experimental basis therefore entries were mainly limited to current members of BSP based in Lahore,Rawalpindi and Karachi. However from next year onwards, outsiders will also be eligible to take part in it.

The judge for this show was Mr Dewayne Weldon of USA whereas the organizing team comprised of:

Habib.ur.Rehman-Project Head(Khi)
Muhammad Awais-Show Manager(Lhr)
Usaid Ahmed-Show Secretary (Khi)
Saud Sami-Show Steward (Khi)
Farhan Qamar-Data Collector (Khi)

I wish to clarify that the categories were based separately on own bred birds(own bred class) and purchased birds(challenge class). The top prizes were given to own bred birds as this promotes the art of breeding exhibition budgies.
Here is the link to display the quality of budgies being bred by Pakistani breeders

usaid,
one word describes he birds,...awesome !...the photos show the love and care taken to maintain these lovely birds, could you please tell us in detail about keeping exhibition quality budgerigars?
1.how much do they cost compared to normal varieties.
2.why is this hobby still limited to a few enthusiasts?are more people joining in ?
3.what special care do these birds require?
4.Are they being bred in pakistan too or do you still have to import them from abroad?
and of course any other information you would like to share with us.

Hello Imran
thanks for the comments

1-Price of an exhibition budgie pair depends on its

a)Pedigree(background of ancestors)
b)Reputation of original breeder
c)Visual Quality

Hence the price can range from 8,000rs to 800,000rs for a single pair.In simple language, you have to pay more in order to get more quality.

Price is not dependent on variety hence a pied e.b and a spangle e.b can be priced equally if their quality and background is similar.

2-The hobby of keeping e.b is limited to a few people since

a)it is only 4 years old in terms of work done to promote it in Pakistan. Most of the fanciers here in my city still don't know what an exhibition budgerigar is.

b)Considering the level of investment required in importing e.b,most of the middle class fanciers are priced out of keeping them.

c)Exhibition budgie chicks need a full year to gain size whereas in case of other varieties, the common trend is to sell chicks as soon as they get weaned.Hence the commercial breeders here are unwilling to bear the holding costs incurred in raising these chicks.Keep this in mind that price is based on visual quality hence the general trend worldwide is to sell e.b of at least 10months age.

d)Exhibition budgies need a flight area where they can fly and exercise their bodies. In case of young chicks, its extremely important as it aids their physical development.Since most of the public here has limited space to work with so they don't have any choice.

3-Like all other varieties, they too need good diet, clean water and a proper environment.Contrary to popular misconceptions that these are poor breeders or very sensitive birds,i must insist that they are equally prolific as Australian budgies if taken care of properly.Furthermore they can easily live upto 10 years and beyond in terms of age.You can use google to track down their diet and other requirements.

4-Exhibition budgies are being bred in Pakistan by a specific group of people including me.All of us are registered with BSP and located primarily in Lahore,Sialkot and Karachi.Importing is something we can't avoid as the fanciers have limited pairs and retain most of the chicks for next year breeding program.
So far BSP has had 3 shipments from UK whereas the last one came from Germany.

If you wish to know more then you are welcome to ask me here on the forum.I will advise you to visit shows organized in Lahore by BSP and CBS.They are held usually around October to November and judge always comes from abroad.

Usaid! Firstly I thank u for ur response and guidance that u gave me regarding BSP. It will help me a lot in future.

Secondly, I went to UVAS in order to see the exhibition today on 4th of April but there was none as i took a round of whole university and asked each and every single person about the exhibit who I came across with while taking the round of university, none could guide me where it was being held. Did it take place and where was it or was it postponed or venue was changed??

I really wanted to see it but am badly disappointed for my futile trip.
